Tiger Say Goodbye to Golf

Tiger Say Goodbye to Golf

Tiger has just about having enough. He said Friday that he was taking an indefinite leave from golf to work on saving his marriage, using the word “infidelity” for the first time in a statement posted on his Web site. Just think of what would golf become if Tiger is no longer the leader of it? Tragic, wretched, sad……

“After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf,” Woods said. “I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.”

The announcement came two weeks after a car accident set in motion a shocking downfall for the world’s No. 1 player, and included sordid allegations of numerous extramarital affairs. One woman even shared a voice mail she said Woods left her two nights before his Nov. 27 accident.

Woods hasn’t been seen in public since the accident. But Tiger was deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that his infidelity had caused to so many people, most of all his wife and children. He said, “I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try.”

The PGA Tour said it supported the decision by its biggest star.

“His priorities are where they need to be, and we will continue to respect and honor his family’s request for privacy,” PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said in a statement, the tour’s first public comment since Woods mentioned his “personal failings” on Dec. 2. “We look forward to Tiger’s return to the PGA Tour when he determines the time is right for him.”

One of Woods’ favorite playing partners said it was the right thing to do as well.

“I think it’s great that he’s going to put his family first and work things out,” Steve Stricker said from Naples, Fla. “Golf will always be there. He wants to make sure his marriage is right and everything is good on the homefront. We’ll sure miss him on tour until he gets things taken care of.”

The announcement by Woods raised the possibility, depending on how long he stays away from the game, that he could miss the Masters for the first time since he played as an amateur in 1995. The tournament is April 8-11.

It will be the second straight season the PGA Tour begins without its No. 1 player, although this is different. A year ago, he was out of golf for eight months while recovering from reconstructive knee surgery, and television ratings dropped 50 percent during his absence.

Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, told The Associated Press that he supports Woods’ decision to take time off for his family.

Addressing the subject of Woods’ sponsors, Steinberg said that “it would be both premature and inappropriate to comment on the status of specific business relationships.

“Suffice it to say, we have had thoughtful conversations and his sponsors have been open to a solution-oriented dialogue,” he said. “Of course, each sponsor has unique considerations and ultimately the decisions they make we would fully understand and accept.”

Woods and Mickelson Unite, is your Golf Game Stagnant and Stop Competitors From Getting Into your Head

Woods and Mickelson Unite, is your Golf Game Stagnant and Stop Competitors From Getting Into your Head

Now that Presidents Cup fever has replaced FedEx Cup mayhem, it will be interesting to see how Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson perform as comrades uniting for a common goal.

Although Team U.S.A. has only five golfers ranked in the top-twenty of the PGA Tour’s Official Golf Rankings, the combination of Woods, Mickelson, Stricker and Furyk will most certainly dominate at this year’s event. With the addition of Scott Verplank and Stewart Cink, who always appear to keep cool under pressure, the “Internationals” will have a tough time holding on, in my opinion, even with Ernie Els leading the pack. Rory Sabbatini can’t close a deal and gets flustered around Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh has missed his last two cuts and Mike Weir just hasn’t shown much spunk this season. Hoping for Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy to hold off the Americans is like wishing for Colin Montgomerie to win an event on the PGA Tour here in the States…it just won’t happen.

Phil Mickelson was featured in first few minutes of the latest Family Guy episode (”Blue Harvest”) on the Fox Network (not available yet as a download). Actually, his wife Amy was the topic of discussion with Phil appearing as a cartoonish prop. The demeaning and vulgar commentary about Amy was too long, unnecessary and not really all that funny. Why did writer Alec Sulkin single out Mickelson? Could it be a weird twist on Mickelson’s “family guy” image?

Or could it be because Elin Woods, a former bikini model, was just too easy a target and no one wishes to upset Woods, lest, in a fit of rage, Tiger decided to purchase the Fox Network and cancel the show!

Without watching the Turning Stone Resort Championship, it was totally up to the internet to provide us with Steve Flesch’s terrific win. Congrats to Flesch although would he have had such an easy time if the top players in the world were competing at Atunyote? Or is this fall series, with the interest falling on keeping a PGA Tour card, more stressful than accruing FedEx Cup points?

Golf for Beginners podcast also discusses Mike Pedersen’s new golf blog which takes us through the top reasons golfers just don’t improve. In addition to these golf tips, we admit a flaw in last week’s blog about the Solheim Cup and answer an email from a listener who asks, “how do you deal with playing partners who insist on keeping you up to date with your score when you’d rather not know your running score?”

Mallorca: The Ticket to the Ultimate Sports 2008 Golf Vacation

Mallorca: The Ticket to the Ultimate Sports 2008 Golf Vacation

If you’re planning a European vacation and you also happen to be a golf enthusiast, then Mallorca, Spain should be on your itinerary is an absolute “must do.” Festive night life, year-round sunshine and great shopping aside, Mallorca has made a name for itself in the tourism industry as a “paradise for golf enthusiasts.” So just what is it about Mallorca that makes it the perfect European golf vacation?

Alcudia, Mallorca is home to Pula, one of the world’s finest golf resorts. Founded in 1995, Pula has become an internationally acclaimed golf course. Thanks to a world-class upgrade which began in 2005, Pula is now ranked number one in Alcudia out of 14 golf courses, boasting the longest and most demanding links and a par 70. Nestled at the foot of a majestic mountain range, golfers of all skill levels will get a thrill out of playing the scenic course at Pula. Pula also features a stunning driving range and two putting greens for golfers who want to fine tune their skills at one of the world’s most astounding golf courses.

The upgrades that were made in 2005 were undertaken in part to bring Pula up to professional golf standards and now Pula has been put on the map for one more reason: the Mallorca Classic. The last of the European PGA tour stops on the circuit before the Volvo Masters, The Mallorca Classic draws the best PGA players from Europe every October. In fact, the Mallorca Classic at Pula is the last chance for PGA players to make the top 115 on the Order of Merit and hold onto their spot for the next season’s tour.

The 2007 Mallorca classic wrapped up in October and those who were lucky enough to hold a ticket were able to see Gregory Bourdy of France win his first Mallorca Classic title. It appeared as though Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands would edge Bourdy out the few days. Perhaps the fact that play was suspended for several days in a row due to uncharacteristically inclement weather threw Derksen’s game off. Bourdy managed to slip ahead for a 3-under par win, becoming the 18th first time winner on the tour and setting a new record for the European PGA for the most maiden tournament winners in a single season.

Bourdy’s maiden win at the Mallorca Classic in October only served to boost the image of Pula even more. Golfers from Europe and elsewhere can count themselves in an elitist class when they make a round at Pula a part of their vacation itinerary. While in Mallorca, tourists would also do well to take in as many of the other thirteen local golf resorts as they can, too. Although many of them have not had the exposure of Pula, they are still well worth including in a European golf vacation.

Golf aside; there are many other reasons to visit Mallorca. Mallorca is rich with cultural heritage, rife with top-notch night clubs and restaurants and has plenty of family-oriented destinations for those who are traveling with kids. However, for the avid golfer, nothing could make a European vacation finer than playing the links at the world-renowned Pula Club.

What Golf Balls Should You Consider Playing With

What Golf Balls Should You Consider Playing With

There are three major brands that monopolize a golfer’s personal preference for the best golf balls in town. Aside from the brand names, you can base your ball preferences on certain standards such as the, ball type that mostly depends on a golfers playing type, based on your own ability as a golfer and of course, based on the playing environment.

Everyone knows that Titleist, Callaway and Nike are the best in the market. Playing with one of these balls is considered a win- win choice among the players. It is no doubt that Titleist is on top of the charts. The golden price tag on these golf balls are worth it especially if you are good enough to qualify as a pro.

Performance wise, this company have mastered the manufacturing of aerodynamic enhanced golf balls that combines both distance and control. Callaway’s HX tour golf balls are their carrier series. Unlike the Titleist Pro V1, this specific type of balls has moderate spin, stops quickly and has a great feel on the greens. Next to the HX tour line, the HX Hot series offers longer distance and works moderately good on the greens.

For only per case, it offers great value and performance for regular players rather than grabbing one of that Pro V1 or HX tour which cost around per case. Nike, being one of the biggest sport shop offers a wider range of golf balls compared to the first two mentioned.

As for their carrier golf ball lines, the Nike One series are available in three types. The Nike One black series offers maximum distance and reduced spins for high launch conditions. Nike One Platinum and Gold on the other hand are designed for higher flight at a lower spin rate.

Choosing depends on which type of golf ball is the player most comfortable with. There is also the option of choosing the balls according to playing types. Among the three basic ball types, the balata golf balls is the most expensive and are most preferred to by the professionals. It allows maximum spin and control because it is made up with a softer core.

The two-piece ball allows the player to achieve longer distances in every strike and is much preferred for rounds with a higher handicap. Lastly, a combination ball gives you the best features of the two other balls, generally preferred by everyone because it suits almost all playing style.

Another would be choosing the balls according to his abilities. If the player is a little off that day or it’s he’s a bit inexperienced, hitting Nike or Titleist will cost him a small fortune. Aside from that, high handicap golfer is not much affected on what kind of golf ball they play.

The Environment is also of utmost important in selecting golf balls. Using hard golf balls on dry courses might get you out of your rhythm. That is the same reason why players carry different types of balls depending on the course, heavier balls for wet courses and lighter ones for dry courses.

How to Play Stableford or Modified Stableford Competitions

How to Play Stableford or Modified Stableford Competitions

more at www.mysurbuy.com

Stableford scoring systems are stroke-play formats in which the high total wins, not the low. That’s because in Stableford, your final score is not your stroke total, but rather the total points you have earned for your scores on each individual hole.

For example, a par might be worth 1 point, a birdie 2. If you par the first hole and birdie the second, you’ve accrued 3 points.

As a format for club tournaments, Stableford formats are more popular in the U.K. than in the U.S. On the pro tours, both the U.S. PGA Tour and the European Tour have a Modified Stableford tournament: The International on the PGA Tour and the ANZ Championship on the European Tour.

Stableford in the Rule Book
Stableford Competitions are addressed in the Rules of Golf under Rule 32. Stableford is a form of stroke play and, with few exceptions, the rules for stroke play apply.

The rulebook also sets forth points totals for a Stableford competition (Stableford tournaments that award points on a different scale than this are known as Modified Stableford):

• More than one over fixed score or no score returned - 0 points
• One over fixed score - 1 point
• Fixed score - 2 points
• One under fixed score - 3 points
• Two under fixed score - 4 points
• Three under fixed score - 5 points
• Four under fixed score - 6 points

The “fixed score” in question is set by the tournament committee. If the fixed score is set as bogey, then a triple bogey is worth 0 points, a double bogey 1 point, a bogey 2 points, a par 3 points, and so on (the committee might also set the fixed score as a numerical value - say, 6 strokes - as opposed to a relative value).

The rules differences for Stableford as compared to normal stroke play have to do with the penalties applied for breaking rules. In some instances (for example, exceeding the 14-club maximum), points are deducted from the competitor, as opposed to a stroke penalty. There are also a number of violations that result in disqualification. The International on the PGA Tour and ANZ Championship on the European Tour use a Modified Stableford format (so-called because its points are awarded on a different scale from that described in the rulebook).

Both pro tournaments use the same points scale:

• Double bogey or worse - minus-3 points
• Bogey - minus-1 point
• Par - 0 points
• Birdie - 2 points
• Eagle - 5 points
• Double eagle - 8 points

The difference between a rulebook Stableford and a Modified Stableford is usually reflected in the quality of the players. A traditional Stableford is appropriate for “normal” golfers (e.g., you and me), most of whom aren’t going to be racking up birdies left and right. Therefore, the traditional Stableford’s points system doesn’t penalize players with negative points.

The pros, however, are in a different league. And the Modified Stableford used on the PGA and European tours harshly penalizes a disaster hole, but offers even greater rewards for very good holes.

Golf Drivers - Distance, Distance, And More Distance

Golf Drivers - Distance, Distance, And More Distance

The driver is considered the second most important club in the golf bag after the putter. This is because it can normally be used 14 times per round on a typical par 72 golf course, and more importantly because the tee shot sets up each hole. An accurate drive can make the rest of the hole seem easy, while a drive that is off line and in the rough, fairway trap, or behind a tree or in a water hazard can cause enormous problems and make par almost impossible.

Golf Driver Evolution

Golf drivers have changed enormously over the past 10-15 years. If you have been away from golf for some time and suddenly decide to pick up the game again, you’ll be in for a slight shock when you try one of today’s modern drivers. First of all the price will be a slap in the face. It is not the least bit unusual for today’s top brands to cost 0 or even more for a driver. The next thing that will catch your attention is the enormous size of the club head. Today’s top driver models typically have the number 460 in them, because the club head is 460 cubic centimeters (cc). This is now the maximum allowable size for the head of a driver. Shaft technology has changed a great deal, and the combination of today’s flexible graphite shafts, along with the club head technology and that of today’s modern golf balls are what produces the prodigious drives that are typically seen each week on the PGA tour. The ladies have benefited a great deal as well. The top woman golfer, Lorena Ochoa from Mexico, weighs only about 115 pounds, but her drives often fly 270 yards or more. When this author was a boy, the longest hitter of that time was a player named George Bayer. Bayer was a large man, probably 6′4″ or more, and he had a powerful swing. He would hit the ball about 275 yards off the tee at that time, and of course that was considered very long. A good drive for male PGA tour players was 250-260 yards in those days, and drivers and other woods actually were made of out wood, typically a hard wood such as persimmon. Today it is not unusual to watch a PGA tour tournament on TV and see drives by the longest hitters in the 320-340 yard range using titanium club heads. Distances like that would have been unthinkable in Bayer’s day.

Driver Club Head Evolution

A 460 cc club head is rather enormous. Why have driver club heads evolved to this state, and what advantages do they provide to the golfer? First of all, the reason that driver heads can be so large is because they are made of light weight titanium material. Titanium is strong and flexible, and today’s top lines of clubs offer a spring or trampoline effect. That is, when the club hits the ball, the face of the drive actually bends inward similar to what happens when a person jumps on a trampoline. When the club face recoils it thrusts the ball out faster than it would otherwise travel, and thus greater distance is obtained. The rules of golf now limit the amount of spring that can be provided by a driver’s club head. If this were not the case then each year new models made of different materials would come out and drives would get ever and ever longer. Before long all the golf courses would be out dated. That has already been the case for many courses, and oftentimes golf holes have needed to be lengthened to keep up with the greater distances provided by today’s drivers and golf balls. Another major benefit of today’s large driver clubs heads is a larger MOI, which stands for moment of inertia. To make a long story short, a larger MOI means that the club head will not twist as much on off-center hits. The result is a better shot even on swings that miss the sweet spot by a certain amount. A miss-hit with one of today’s 460 titanium drivers will mean losing a bit of distance, but the same amount of miss-hit with an old wooden persimmon driver would result in a shot that would be comparatively much worse.

Of course most golfers love the extra distance that the new high-tech drivers provide. There is a downside to all this, however. That is, the longer the drive, the more difficult it is to keep the ball in the fairway.

Where to Take a Golf Break in France This Winter

Where to Take a Golf Break in France This Winter

Winter is a frustrating time for us golfers. Most of the courses in Britain are in “switch-off” mode and jetting off to the Southern Hemisphere is not on the cards. So where do you head to in order to work on your game around Christmas time?

For my money, a golf break in France is an excellent winter option. Even the north of France, with its sandy subsoil and reputation for presenting golf courses in impeccable condition, is a serious temptation. However, the southern half of France - just a 90 minute flight away - will put a spring in your step and keep you away from the crowds of Portugal and Spain. Here are some of the courses in the south of France which you must consider visiting this winter:

Barbaroux

Pete Dye Junior and Senior combined to make this absolute gem. Rated among the World Top 100, Barbaroux presents a stern test and each of the 18 holes presents an entirely different set of challenges. You’ll need to be at home with every club in your bag to score well here, and it might be prudent to forget about the scorecard and just have fun out there - even if you’re doing badly, the scenery is outstanding. A superb course for your winter golf break in France.

Royal Mougins

Rated in the European Top 50 and with a stunning, and brand-new, hotel and spa on site, this is becoming the talk of the golfing town. Designed by Robert von Hagge and past host to the European Tour, the course is outlandish and brilliant with every type of hazard on offer. It’s not particularly long but you need to be a clever player to score well. For after the round, there’s great food and the hotel’s bedrooms are massive and beautifully-appointed.

Nimes Campagne

You’ll need your golfer’s intuition to be on top form for this course - knowing when to aim big and when to scale things down is all important here. It’s a great course though, host to several European Tour events and definitely one of the highlights of a French golf holiday. It’s a parkland affair lovingly created with beautiful trees, cunning greens and just a splash of water.

Chiberta

This is, to me, one of the best links courses in the whole of Europe. A Tom Simpson design, the course offers fabulous Atlantic Ocean views as well as subtle and enjoyable golf that weaves through woodland forcing you to adapt, or watch your scorecard struggle! The clubhouse is lovely and has always offered a delightfully warm welcome. A must-play when visiting the south on a golf holiday in France.

Medoc Les Chateaux

As a regular host of the European Tour and with an impressive 36 holes, you can be sure you’re getting a full day’s entertainment at Medoc Les Chateaux. Watch out though - it’s deceptively tough (gorse and heather and ditches catch many wayward balls) and you need to plan for every hole. The greens and fairways are large but the borders and water hazards are hugely unforgiving. Even at its most frustrating, it’s hard to be angry with a course that looks as beautiful as this. With a lovely four-star hotel on site and wine-tasting every where you look, Medoc “ticks the boxes” for many a fair golfer.

Seignosse

You’ll need to keep your wits about you to do well at Seignosse - the beautiful Robert von Hagge designed course. Concentrate and you’ll find the course quite a fair one and pick up a fair few pars. Olazabal played here before the Masters so similar is the challenge and it’s deservedly rated in the World Top 100. Very easy on the eye and great to play. A must play on a French golf holiday.

With all these quality courses, a golf holiday in France’s south is worth considering all year round but is an even more enticing proposition when it’s only a quick flight from blighty. Of course, from October to March, France offers low-season prices so there’s no excuse not to go. Add to this, the delightful culture and splendid gourmet treats and you’ll have to agree that a south of France golf break is an outstanding choice.
