Types of Golf Games

There are numerous types of golf games that can be played in golf competitions on golf courses. These types of games can be played individually and/or in groups of two or more players. The most common type of golf game played in completions is single stroke. The single stroke golf event is the most played event in all the professional golf tours around the globe. Other games that are are played in competition include; foursomes, Chapman foursomes, Canadian foursomes, American foursomes, stableford (individual or in teams), Irish fourball and ambrose. All the above mentioned types of golf games will be discussed below in the following sections.

Foursomes (including mixed)
The foursomes team event can be played with mixed players and utilises the half combined stroke handicap of all players competing. During the event, players play alternatively from the tee and alternate shots for the remainder of each hole.  If a penalty shot is obtained by a player, this does not alter the order of play of that particular hole.

Chapman Foursomes
The Chapman foursome team event utilises the half combined stroke handicap of all the competing players. Each player plays from the tee and plays the next shot with their own ball. The player then decides the ball to be played, and this ball is then played alternatively for the remainder of the hole.

Canadian Foursomes
The Canadian foursome team event  utilises the half combined stroke handicap of all  the competing players. Both players play from the tee and decide which ball to be played. The ball is then played alternatively for the remainder of the hole.

American Foursomes
The American foursome team event  utilises the half combined stroke handicap of all the competing players. Both players play from the tee and then play one shot with their partners ball. The players then decide on which ball to take and this ball is then played alternatively for the remainder of the hole.

Stableford
The stableford event, which uses points system, depends on the score and handicap of a player playing a particular ranked hole. The points are ranked accordingly; double bogey or worse (0 points), bogey (1 point), par (2 points), birdie (3 points), eagle (4points), double eagle (5 points) and better than double eagle (8 points). To calculate the stableford points for a hole, say a player (handicap 10) scores a par on a par 3 (ranked 2nd hardest) the player will have an extra shot on that particular hole (due to handicap and hole ranking) and hence  will acquire 3 stableford points (birdie).

Stableford Teams Event
The stableford team event is played in teams of three or four. The best scores of the team is then recorded on a results card and initialed. The highest stableford score found during casement of the event is the winner. Were winning scores are tied, a count back of strokes must be carried out.

Irish Fourball
Irish fourball is played in a team of four whilst using the stableford format. The two (2) best scores are recorded from holes 1 to 6; the three (3) best scores are recorded from holes 7 to 12 and the best four (4) scores are recorded from holes 13 to 18. If only three players are in a team then all three (3) scores are recorded for all 18 holes. All scores must have to initial of the player noted to be eligible for a competition event.

Ambrose
Ambrose is played in teams of two, three or four. Handicaps are calculated for the event by adding those of all the players and dividing the total by: four (4) in a two ball event; six (6) in a three ball event; and eight (8) in a four ball event. The card is marked as for a single stroke round with nett scores calculated by substracting the exact resulting handicaps. In this event the lowest handicap marker becomes the team captain. Each player playing in an ambrose event must record his/her handicap on the score card and the card must be countersigned by another member of the team on completeltion of  the game and before it is returned. Each player must put out on each hole except when it is nt possible to better the existing score. Most ambrose events adopt preferred lite of approximately one card length, whereby the ball must be placed through the green and in a position behind the ball already struck.

In some ambrose events it is a requirement to take a certain number of drives from the tee of each player of the ambrose team. The number of tee shots per player depends on the number of players in a team.

In a four (4) person ambrose team event a minimum of four (4) tee shots must be taken for each player. In a three (3) person ambrose team event a minimum of five (5) tee shots must be taken for each player. In a two (2) person ambrose team event a minimum of six (6) tee shots must be taken for each player.
